It is your tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) telling you that one (or more) of your tires is dangerously under inflated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Under-inflated\u00a0tires are estimated to cause thousands of car crashes and hundreds of deaths each year, yet 42 percent of drivers still can\u2019t identify the TPMS vehicle dashboard icon, and 1 in 10 surveyed admit to having intentionally ignored a TPMS warning and continued to drive, according to survey results from\u00a0<a title=\"learn more about TPMS from Schrader International\" href=\"http:\/\/tpmsmadesimple.com\/\">Schrader International<\/a>.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>While the TPMS is not a requirement in Canada, according to <a title=\"Is the Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) required on new vehicles sold in Canada?\" href=\"http:\/\/www.tc.gc.ca\/en\/services\/road.html\">Transport Canada<\/a>, the U.S. Federal Regulations require that all new light vehicles sold in the U.S. since September 2007 be equipped with a tire pressure monitoring system. Some manufacturers do offer TPMS on vehicles sold in Canada as either standard or optional equipment.\u00a0 To find out whether the TPMS as equipped conforms to U.S. federal standards or the manufacturer\u2019s own standards, please refer to the owner\u2019s manual or contact the dealership.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless of the style of TPMS alert you have in your car, when it lights up, your tires are sending you a very important message: One or more of your tires is significantly underinflated and you or an auto service technician needs to take a closer look as soon as possible. \u00a0The TPMS warning symbol will illuminate when one or more\u00a0of the tires is 25 percent\u00a0under-inflated, at which point the tire is\u00a0significantly\u00a0under-inflated\u00a0and the vehicle is impaired, affecting maneuverability, handling, and braking distance.<\/p>\n<p>Based on their own research and collision investigation programs, Transport Canada has not identified a pattern of motor vehicle collisions caused conclusively by tire failure in Canada. However, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports\u00a0tires that are\u00a0under-inflated\u00a0by more than 25 percent are <i>three times more likely<\/i> to be involved in a crash related to tire\u00a0problems than a vehicle with proper inflation. According to information shared by <a title=\"Learn more about TPMS at Schrader International\" href=\"http:\/\/www.schraderinternational.com\/Schrader-Past-To-Present\/Pioneering-TPMS?sc_lang=en-US-NA\">Schrader International<\/a> from NHTSA and the U.S. Department of Energy, nearly 200,000 accidents are caused by tire-related issues each year, and 60 highway fatalities and 33,000 injuries are caused by under-inflated\u00a0tires each year in the United States.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Check your tire pressure\" href=\"https:\/\/www.activegreenross.com\/completetireandautocentreblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Check-your-tire-pressure-20140507_141009.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" style=\"border: 0px; margin: 10px;\" title=\"Check your tire pressure\" src=\"https:\/\/www.activegreenross.com\/completetireandautocentreblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Check-your-tire-pressure-20140507_141009-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Check your tire pressure\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a>If you see the light, you don\u2019t have to panic, but you should make an immediate effort to <a title=\"kieeping your tires properly inflated saves lifes and gas\" href=\"http:\/\/www.askpatty.com\/page\/keeping_your_tires_inflated_saves_lives_and_gas\">check the pressure<\/a> in all four tires manually using a tire pressure gauge. Remember, you can\u2019t tell if your tires are at their correct pressure just by looking at them: it is virtually impossible to tell a tire is\u00a0under-inflated\u00a0visually until it is nearly 50 percent deflated. <i>That\u2019s practically flat!!<\/i><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Look for tire pressure in driver door jamb\" href=\"https:\/\/www.activegreenross.com\/completetireandautocentreblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/check-your-tire-pressure-20140513_114535.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" style=\"border: 0px; margin: 10px;\" title=\"Look for tire pressure in driver door jamb\" src=\"https:\/\/www.activegreenross.com\/completetireandautocentreblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/check-your-tire-pressure-20140513_114535-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Look for tire pressure in driver door jamb\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a>Tire pressure monitoring systems do not replace the maintenance procedures recommended in the owner\u2019s manual. Don\u2019t wait for the TPMS light to tell you to check your tire pressure; just make a habit of checking them yourself once a month. How do you find your correct tire pressure? Look for a sticker inside the driver\u2019s door, or find it in your Owner\u2019s Manual. Tire pressures embossed on the outside of the tire are MAXIMUM pressures and may not apply to your specific vehicle. Besides <a title=\"learn more about tire safety\" href=\"http:\/\/www.askpatty.com\/page\/celebrating_tire_safety_cooper_style\">tire safety concerns<\/a>, keeping your tires inflated to proper pressures also improves your fuel economy saving you money on fuel, and lengthens the lifespan of your tires saving you money on untimely replacements.<\/p>\n<p>Checking your tire pressure monthly will alert you to any slow leaks that may be present due to a failing valve, small puncture in the\u00a0tire\u00a0or poor seal\u00a0against the wheel. Battery life on most TPMS valves is about five years, so if your car is equipped with a TPMS system, it may also be time to have your valves replaced.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s the good news? According to Schrader, as the drive for increased education progresses, so has the level of safety for U.S. motorists.
