Unfortunately, only 31 per cent of Canadian drivers measure their tire pressures monthly. <!--more--><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong data-start=\"891\" data-end=\"936\">Keeping tires properly inflated pays off.<\/strong> With average Canadian gas prices around <strong data-start=\"977\" data-end=\"988\">$1.50\/L<\/strong>, a driver covering <strong data-start=\"1008\" data-end=\"1030\">20,000 km per year<\/strong> can save about <strong data-start=\"1046\" data-end=\"1062\">$75 annually<\/strong>, while someone driving <strong data-start=\"1086\" data-end=\"1108\">40,000 km per year<\/strong> could save <strong data-start=\"1120\" data-end=\"1128\">$150<\/strong>. These savings come simply from avoiding the extra fuel burned when tires are under-inflated and that is just the start of how having optimal tire pressure helps.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tc.canada.ca\/en\/road-transportation\/motor-vehicle-safety\/inflating-your-tires?utm_source=activegreenross.com\">Transport Canada<\/a> reports that a single tire underinflated by about <strong data-start=\"312\" data-end=\"321\">8 psi<\/strong> can increase fuel consumption by up to <strong data-start=\"361\" data-end=\"367\">4%<\/strong>. That\u2019s a big penalty \u2014 and it means the savings from proper inflation are often higher than conservative estimates suggest.<\/p>\n<p>The environmental benefit is also real: that\u2019s a reduction of up to <strong data-start=\"1291\" data-end=\"1327\">220 kg of CO\u2082 emissions per year<\/strong> for higher-mileage drivers. By properly inflating your tires, you save money and also help the environment by burning less fuel<\/p>\n<p>Using Statistics Canada\u2019s latest posted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statcan.gc.ca\/en\/topics-start\/automotive?utm_source=activegreenross.com\">annual fuel-sales data<\/a> (net gasoline sales \u2248 <strong data-start=\"246\" data-end=\"269\">43.6 billion litres<\/strong> in 2023) and an industry estimate that keeping tires properly inflated improves average fuel economy by at least <strong data-start=\"380\" data-end=\"388\">0.6% and up to 4%.\u00a0<\/strong> Across all drivers, properly inflated tires would have avoided roughly <strong data-start=\"441\" data-end=\"463\">262 million litres<\/strong> of gasoline and about <strong data-start=\"486\" data-end=\"511\">602,000 tonnes of CO\u2082<\/strong> in a single year.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"502\" data-end=\"822\">Beyond fuel savings, proper tire care pays off in longevity and safety. Keeping tires inflated to spec and rotating them regularly helps ensure <strong data-start=\"646\" data-end=\"659\">even wear<\/strong>, extending tire life and reducing replacement costs. You do not want to over-inflate your tires either, so be sure to follow the tire manufacturer and vehicle recommend optimal pressure for your tires.<\/p>\n<p><b>Alignment<\/b> \u2013 If your car is shaking or pulling to one side it could be a sign of an alignment issue. Because uneven or accelerated tire wear may indicate an alignment problem, it\u2019s a good idea to have your car\u2019s alignment checked at least once a year.<\/p>\n<p><b>Rotation<\/b> \u2013 Unless your car manual has a specific recommendation, the Car Care Council recommends having tires rotated every 10,000 km \u00a0to promote uniform tire wear. Unbalanced wheels can cause rapid wear of shock absorbers and struts, and wheel balance can change as a result of normal tire wear. Rotating the tires to keep their sizes equal is critical on full-size four-wheel drive vehicles as a difference of only 6 mm between the outside circumference of the front and rear tires can cause expensive damage. Replacing all four tires at the same time, rather than just the front or rear tires, is highly recommended for these vehicles.<\/p>\n<p><b>Tread<\/b> \u2013\u00a0Use the penny test and visually inspect tires for sign of uneven wear. place a penny in the tire&#8217;s groove with the Queen&#8217;s crown facing down. If you can see the top of the Queen&#8217;s crown, the tire needs replacing. If the tread depth falls below the minimum legal requirement or the sidewalls become severely cracked or punctured, tire replacement will be necessary.<\/p>\n<p>Each year, the <a href=\"https:\/\/tracanada.ca\/\">Rubber Association of Canada<\/a> (RAC), promotes \u201cBe Tire Smart\u201d week, in springtime in Canada.
